How You Can Help

Make a Difference Today

Improve Access to Healthy Foods and Beverages By:

  • Supporting best practice ideas, such as a farm-to-school, school garden, school salad bar program or farm-to-institution programs
  • Establishing a community garden that allows children and families to supplement their nutrition with fresh produce
  • Improving school nutrition and wellness policies that replace junk food and unhealthy beverages at school events, in vending machines, snack bars and cafeterias with healthy choices during the school day
  • Advocating for and enacting zoning laws that limit fast food restaurants and unhealthy mobile vending, especially near schools
  • Converting your local corner store into a healthy store that sells fresh produce
  • Creating economic stimulus programs or public-private partnerships that promote the establishment of farmer’s markets and retail grocery operations in low-income neighborhoods
  • Establishing supplemental nutrition assistance payment options (i.e. CalFresh or WIC) at your local produce venue

Improve Access to Safe Physical Activity Spaces By:

  • Encouraging shared use or joint use of school and community resources to increase the amount of resources available for physical activity
  • Ensuring that community members from underserved communities are engaged in decision-making about sustainable community issues
  • Requiring quality physical education and physical activity standards
  • Cleaning up neglected parks and creating safer parks
  • Making sure all streets have proper lighting and have well-maintained sidewalks and bicycle lanes
  • Requiring developers to build adequate parks, playgrounds and/or walking trails in new housing developments
  • Establishing safe routes to school programs to create safer environments and promote children walking to school
  • Establishing traffic calming and safety measures to encourage walking and biking
  • Linking public transportation to housing, parks/recreational centers, education, employment and grocery stores
